Customized Leadership Training:
Problem: A regional program management, construction services, and engineering company was growing quickly, both nationally and globally. The executive team realized that a major limiting factor of the growth strategy was the ability of leaders at all levels to step up to larger responsibilities; to develop the next level of leaders; to ensure consistent standards of quality and safety; and to maintain the company’s high-performance culture. The aggressive growth required leaders to be hands-on managers, both leading their teams and also applying their functional and technical expertise, as needed.
Approach: We quickly got to know the client’s business, spending time in the field and with key leaders to understand their specific operating challenges. We recognized that the company needed managers who could oversee the work; lead their people; and selectively get involved in doing parts of the work. We designed, developed and delivered a customized Can-Do Leadership (CDL) program that engaged the leaders in specific operations discussions and that involved them in practical, realistic exercises designed to focus the CDL leadership concepts on specific challenges the leaders faced. The leaders received in-depth insights into their leadership styles and learned how to apply the insights to effectively lead and develop others.
Results: As a result of participating in the Can-Do Leadership programs, the leaders’ impact on the job was immediate and dramatic. The leaders who participated in the program demonstrated consistent leadership behaviors to help reinforce a high-performance culture. They leveraged their expertise as both leaders and doers; and they aggressively developed their subordinate leaders to accelerate their subordinate’s ability to step-up to the next level of leadership. The program has contributed to the company’s growth, both nationally and globally. As the company grows, it has increased flexibility to reassign leaders from one role to another with minimal disruptions.
